Blackwood, Caerphilly

Blackwood (Welsh Coed Dduon ) is a town in southern Wales. It has about 23,000 inhabitants. The city was up to the closure of the last mine in 1990 a major center of the British mining. Over time it is geographically largely merged with the neighboring towns Pontllanfraith, Cefn Fforest and Ynysddu.

The Philantophist John Moggeridge the city planned around 1820 as a social reform settlement pattern similar to the plans of Robert Owen. At the beginning of the 20th century Blackwood was an important center of the Chartist movement.

The city was known primarily as the home of the rock band Manic Street Preachers and the Welsh poet Islwyn.
