Blaga Dimitrova

Blaga Nikolova Dimitrova ( Bulgarian Блага Димитрова; born January 2, 1922 in Byala Slatina, Bulgaria; † 2 May 2003 in Sofia) was a Bulgarian writer, poet, translator and politician.

Life

Blaga Dimitrova grew up in Veliko Tarnovo and then studied Slavic Studies, Sofia. After her graduation in 1945 she received her doctorate in Leningrad and Moscow. In Bulgaria, it was particularly as a translator from ancient Greek, Polish, Russian, Swedish, German and Vietnamese produced, wrote literary criticism and essays, and has worked as an editor for Youth books. In the time of the Vietnam War, she traveled five times to Vietnam and finally adopted a Vietnamese girl. She was married to the literary critic Jordan Wassilew.

At the end of the communist era in Bulgaria, she founded together with other 1987, the Committee for Environmental Protection in Russian and the club for Democracy, which later became the opposition alliance emerged Union of Democratic Forces. 1992-93 she was finally Vice President of Bulgaria, but stepped out of disappointment with the policy back. Blaga Dimitrova was highly regarded because of their literary works, but also because of their social commitment, in Bulgaria. She was chairman of Raina Kabaiwanska Foundation for orphans and received numerous literary prizes, including the Grand Prize of the European Writers' Association The Cog ( 2001).
