Blankets (comics)

Blankets is an autobiographical comic by Craig Thompson from the year 2003. It got several Harvey Awards, Eisner Awards and Ignatz Awards.

In Germany Blankets and has only been re-released in 2004 by the SPEED Comics Publisher 2009 by Carlsen. The translation was done by Claudia fly.

Action

Blankets plays in Wisconsin in the 1990s. The main character is, as the narrator Craig. It is told by his strict, fundamentalist Christian upbringing and growing up. Together with his brother Craig tries to escape by painting everyday. His parents show for his artistic talent but little interest. In high school, Craig is an outsider until he meets Raina, showing him her love the path to a united, positive adult life, free from the constraints and doctrines of his upbringing.

The work is largely based on Thompson's own experiences and his view of things on this. The love story Raina is real. However, Thompson took also changes to his life story, the band completely conceals the existence of a sister, who also grew up in the household of Thompson.
