Blauburger

Blue Burger is a red grape variety that was bred from a cross between blue and Portuguese Gamay at the Federal College and Federal Office for Viticulture and Pomology at Klosterneuburg by Fritz Zweigelt from 1923.

The variety is mainly used in Austria where it occupies approximately 903 ha ( 2009) 2 % of the vineyards. Half of this land is located in Lower Austria and a quarter in Burgenland. In other wine-growing regions, the vine is only a few hectares each. This is also true for Germany, where the Blue Burger is grown only tentatively.

He is very sensitive to gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) and frugal in terms of the claims to the soil and climate, creating high returns. On the other hand, it is susceptible to powdery mildew and stem necrosis. Blue Burger is an early to medium late maturing variety. The grapes are long-stemmed, medium-sized to large shouldered and easily. The berries are round, medium in size and black in blue.

The Blue Burger gives color-rich, velvety red wines. They have an intense, but neutral red bouquet. If the income is too high or the materials are not cheap, the wines are very expressive weak. For this reason Blauburger is mainly used as a cover of wine.
