After the failure of Blender development company Not A Number In early 2002 Blender threatened no longer to be further developed. Since, in the context of the dotcom bubble, a commercial development did not seem realistic to Ton Roosendaal decided to found the Blender Foundation with the aim of Blender as an open source project to further develop and commercialize. Condition of the investors for the release of the source code under an open source license was a one-time payment of € 100,000. As part of the "Free Blender " campaign, this amount was donated in seven weeks by the community, so that Blender on October 13, 2002 came under the GNU General Public License.

Since then, the Blender Foundation has the concept to guarantee by a combination of voluntary and paid programmers with a further development of Blender. Play a decisive role in the regular projects simultaneously create by a collaboration of artists and programmers within a few months a movie or a game and make sure the necessary optimizations in Blender. This is to guarantee that the Blender development remains close to the needs of artists and thus the user.
