Psychrolutes sculpin

Psychrolutes sculpin, also Blobfisch (English: Blob sculpin ) called, is one of the fathead sculpins ( Psychrolutidae ). The bottom-dwelling fish live in depths of 800-2800 meters in the northern Pacific Ocean, from Japan to the Bering Strait to California.

Features

Psychrolutes sculpin is a maximum of 70 inches long, a maximum weight of 9.5 kg can reach and has a spherical head and a limp body seated skin. Head and body of young fish, less than 5 cm, from small thread- like outgrowths covered that disappear in adult animals. The dorsal fin has 8 hard and 19-20 soft rays, the anal fin 12 to 14 soft rays. The pectoral fins are 24 fin rays supported by (22 ) to 25 ( 26). The Vorkiemendeckel has no sting. The fish are gray to black in color on the top and slightly mottled on the head. The underside is light The head is whitish with large specimens.

Way of life

The animals feed on sea pens, crustaceans, molluscs and sea urchins. They are caught by deep sea anglers.
