Blodeuwedd

Blodeuwedd or Blodeuedd ( [ blo'deiweð ], blodeu, blodeuyn, welch " Blossom" ) is a female mythical figure of Celtic mythology of Wales from the story Math fab Mathonwy ( " Math, the son Mathonwys " ), the fourth branch of the Mabinogion.

Mythology

Blodeuwedd was created by Gwydyon and Math, king of Gwynedd, oak, broom and meadowsweet. For these materials, their name, " born of flowers " or "flower face " is derived, from.

Blodeuwedds generation served a single purpose, her marriage to Gwydyons nephew Llew Llaw Gyffes. This could namely, according to the Geis ( " taboo ", " ban" ), his mother Arianrhod had imposed from wrath upon him, not marry a human woman. The pretty Blodeuwedd so was the wife of Llew, as they did not violate this Geis. One day Blodeuwedds husband went away to visit Math. During the absence Llews, roamed a hunt around the house Blodeuwedds. One of the young hunter, Goronwy Pybyr, she offered her hospitality, while the two fell in love and planned the death of Llew. However, the elimination of the husband was complicated because he could die only under certain conditions. Goronwy therefore had to spend a whole year to carve a mythical spear.

When this was done, asked Blodeuwedd their spouses for the umpteenth time, on the way in which they could assassinate him. The naive Llew demonstrated it to his wife. He allowed himself a bath and tied a goat next to that should help him getting out of the tub. As Llew now agitated and with one foot on the edge of the bathtub and the other was on the goat, he could be killed. Goronwy came out and hurled his spear at him poisoned. However, he only hit his side, and so Llew was able to escape into the Nantlle Valley in the form of an eagle. Llews uncle Gwydyon sought Llew and turned him back into a human. After about a year recovery time Llew killed his rival Goronwy with the same spear and Blodeuwedd was of Gwydyon enchanted into an owl as punishment for her infidelity. So they could only roam at night alone around and her face was never to see the light.

Name Change

The initial name of the flower girl in the story was Blodeuedd, suggesting blodeu of blodeuyn ( welsh for " flower" ) the majority. A second possibility arises from welsh blawd ( "flower" ), which is the Irish Bláth and from the Celtic word * developed Blato - derived is. After the curse that Gwydion imposed on her, she is referred to as Blodeuwedd. This is the kymrische name for owl. Literally translated it means " flower face", which is based at the owl on the circle around the eyes arranged face feathers.
