Action

The play takes place in the 1960s and 1970s in Liverpool.

Mrs. Johnstone suffers from poverty, already has five children, is expecting twins and decides to one of the two sons of her infertile employer ( Mrs. Lyons, in which Mrs. Johnstone works as a cleaning woman) to leave. Mrs. Johnstone is very superstitious, so Mrs. Lyons tries with superstition "If they learn it ( they are twins ), they will both die " to prevent that tells Mrs. Johnstone of the son given away. The two sons ( Eddie and Mickey ) grow accordingly on in very different circumstances, and know nothing of the existence of the other. By chance they get to know and decide blood brothers.

Growing up in different backgrounds and values represents the majority of the piece, the two meet again and again. Of course, both fall in love with the same girl (Linda ), advised not only because full of envy and jealousy of each other's lives more and more each other.

Ultimately, the envy of Mickey ( the " poor" ) to Eddie is so great that it bursts into a city council meeting to shoot Eddie ( Mickey suspects that his son Eddie is ). In this scene Mrs.Johnstone says her sons that they are twins, after which both ( Eddie by Mickey, Mickey by the police ) to be shot.

Some more action side strands run through the whole piece. Thus, for example, the marriage of Mrs. Lyons and her husband ( industrialist, none of the "wrong" son knows ) by the growing hysteria of Mrs. Lyons shattered, the brother of Mickey ( Sammy ) always ends up back in prison, the love between Mickey and Linda always learns new stress tests.
