Bloomfield is a city in San Juan County in the U.S. state of New Mexico in the United States with 6420 inhabitants ( 2000).

Geography

The city is located in the northeast of the county, in the extreme northwestern New Mexico, about 30 miles from Arizona is in the north about 10 miles from Colorado, in the west away and has a total area of 13.1 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 6,417 people in 2,222 households and 1,708 families. The population density was 495 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 62.38 % White, 0.33 % African American, 16.71 % Native American, 0.34 % Asian, and other groups.

Of the 2,222 households out of which 42.6 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.9 % were married couples living together, 15.5 % had a female householder with no husband, and 23.1% were non-families, 19.7 % of all households are made up and in 7.4 % have someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.85 and the average family size was 3.26 persons.

In relation to the entire town the population was spread out with 32.4 % under the age of 18, 9.7 % from 18 to 24, 27.0% between 25 and 44 years, 20.9% between 45 and 64 years and 10.0% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 32,905, and the median income for a family was $ 34,760. Males had a median income of $ 29,144, women $ 19,203. The per capita income was $ 14,424. 15.2 % of families and 14.7 % of the population were below the poverty line.
