The Bloomington PrairieThunder were established in 2006 as a franchise of the United Hockey League. Was made possible the establishment of the team through the construction of the $ 37 million -dollar U.S. Cellular Coliseum. Neither in its only UHL game time, nor in the following three years after renaming this in International Hockey League after the 2006/07 season following the same league that existed from 1945 to 2001, the PrairieThunder could reach the playoffs and had a mixed record.

After Jarrod skald had the team through the seasons 2008/ 09 and 2009/10, took over in August 2010 after the departure of Jason Christie, who worked as assistant coach of the Chicago Wolves before, the position of the head coach.

In the season 2010/ 11, the Bloomington participated PrairieThunder on the Central Hockey League. At the end of the season, the team employed a game mode. The gap left by the PrairieThunder in the city, was then filled by the Bloomington Blaze.
