Blows Against the Empire is the first album Paul Kant Ner, the singer, guitarist and co-founder of the American psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane. The concept album was released in November 1970. The name Jefferson Starship was used here for the first time on the front and inside of the hinged cover for the musicians. In 1974, Jefferson Airplane changed its name officially under that name.

Formation

The year 1970 was a time of personal upheaval for Jefferson Airplane. Drummer Spencer Dryden left the band and Marty Balin should follow soon. Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady were dedicated to Hot Tuna with the Blue Rock, Jefferson Airplane released this year, apart from best-of album, The Worst of Jefferson Airplane, no album. Together with his then partner, Grace Slick and musicians Jefferson Airplane and other groups from the San Francisco Bay Area such as the Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills and Nash and Quicksilver Messenger Service Paul Kantner recorded the album in the Pacific High recordings and in Wally Heider's Studio.

Concept

The album tells the story of a group of the establishment dismissive (Hey Dick, Whatever you think of us is totally irrelevant (Dick, nickname of Richard Nixon, 1970 President of the USA) ) member of the counterculture. They hijack a spaceship, build it around for their purposes, and fly it with 7000 people on board around 1990 into space in search of a planet for a new beginning of mankind. Mitverwoben is the private situation Grace Slick and Paul Kant Listeners: During recording, Grace Slick was pregnant with China and she said: I will not carry the government 's children

In 1983 with the album Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra a sequel.

Style and reception

Musically, the bandwidth ranges from accompanied only with a banjo lullaby The Baby Tree on sound collages (Home and XM ) to the known from the Jefferson Airplane album Volunteers mix of country and psychedelic rock with polyphonic vocals. William Ruhlmann of allmusic raises the dense instrumentation and complex arrangements with enough hooks and harmonies out to keep the whole interesting and gave the album four out of five stars.

Robert Christgau gave the album an average rating only, criticized Kant agent vocals and melodies, and said, It [ Starship ] not even takes off.

The album was nominated for the 1971 sci-fi Price Hugo.
