The three-color Papageienamadine ( Erythrura trichroa, also Amblynur trichroa ), also known as Tri-color Papageiamadine, is a small Prachtfinkenart. A distinction of this type, a number of subtypes.

Description

The three-color Papageiamadine reaches a body length of twelve inches and weighs on average 14.4 grams. The males have a indigo blue head, a green body, a red tail and black beak. There are also some rare other color varieties available. The females are usually similar colored males, but have a less intense blue feathered head and the blue is less extensive. Young birds are much matt colored than the adult birds. Some young birds show already from the beginning of blue on the head, in others it is lacking. The upper mandible is dark when the young birds with yellow sheaths.

The song is composed of trills and chirping siren calls.

Dissemination and lifestyle

The range of the three-color Papageiamadine is Sulawesi, the Moluccas, the Bismarck Archipelago, New Guinea, Melanesia and the Cape York Peninsula. In New Guinea, their altitudinal distribution ranges during the breeding season 800-2000 meters above sea level. After the breeding season, the three-color Papageiamadinen pull against it from the mountain forests in the lowlands. The birds mostly inhabit forest edges and plantations in the lowlands and in the mountains. On the Cape York Peninsula they live on the edge of rain forests and moist grasslands. In the New Hebrides they come in large numbers on plantations that have large areas of grass. During the seed maturity of the grasses here find some very large flocks. Three-color Papageiamadinen are generally very shy and live in pairs during the breeding season. After the breeding season they also occur in flocks of up to 100 birds.
