Blue Lake (Croatia)

Collapse doline

The Blue Lake ( Jezero Croatian Modro or Plavo Jezero ) is located at the bottom of a collapse doline outside the town of Imotski in Croatia. It owes its name to its intense blue shimmering color.

The height of the water level fluctuates considerably depending on rainfall. Well filled the lake has a depth of about 100 meters. However, in dry summer months, it also happens that it dries completely. The diameter of the sinkhole is about 600 meters. The cliffs rise between 400 and 900 meters in height.

At the top of the sinkhole is the castle Topana, which was already mentioned in the 10th century in a Byzantine writing. It is the origin of the town Imotski, lays at the foot of the castle and on the verge of collapse funnel. The city center is just a short walk from the lake. On a paved road, which was created on the occasion of the visit of Emperor Franz Joseph, you can easily walk to the lake.

The inhabitants Imotskis use the lake for swimming in summer. If it is dried out, a football game is traditionally held on his property.

About one kilometer north-west of the Blue Lake is the Red Sea ( Croatian Crveno Jezero ), one of the largest water-filled sinkholes in the world.
