Blue-throated Barbet

The Blue -cheeked Barbet ( Megalaima asiatica ) is a 23 -centimeter representative of the family of Asian barbets ( Megalaimidae ).

Appearance

The bird has a dark green back plumage, the belly and the tail are colored light green. Particularly striking is the head, which is mostly light blue. The forehead, the neck and the upper part of the head are reddish. About the eye the birds have three broad and black stripes. The legs are brown, light brown and the beak of the front tip of the upper beak half is black.

Habitat

The habitat of the Blue -cheeked beard bird extends from northern India to Southeast Asia. There inhabited this type mixed forests in the Himalayas, plains and gardens in human settlements.

Way of life

The very gregarious birds often sing together in small groups. As food they eat fruits, especially figs, but larger insects. About the courtship of birds, little is known except that the males pursue the females in flight.

Reproduction

In the breeding season, these birds cave nests in trees, which can be increased more and more over the years. The boys are completely naked and blind at hatching and are fed by both parents birds. After the young birds are fledged, which are distributed by the parents from the area and the adult birds begin shortly thereafter with a second brood.

Threat

The IUCN leads this type low risk because of their wide distribution in the category (Least Concern ).

Subspecies

It recognized three subspecies:

  • Megalaima asiatica asiatica ( Latham, 1790). The nominate comes from the northeast Pakistan ago to the western and northern Myanmar and Yunnan in the southwest.
  • Megalaima asiatica davisoni Hume, 1877. This subspecies is distributed from southeastern Myanmar to the South-East Yunnan and into northern Indochina.
  • Megalaima asiatica Chersonesus ( Chasen & Kloss, 1927). This subspecies is native to southern Thailand.
