Blue Train is a jazz album by John Coltrane from the year 1957.

Background

Many see Blue Train Coltrane as the first real album since Coltrane alone for the first time the musicians and pieces selected. He wrote all the compositions except I'm Old Fashioned, a jazz standard by Jerome Kern / Johnny Mercer.

Blue Train is a long, rhythmically varying piece that begins as a brooding blues in a minor mood while Coltrane's first solo chorus goes in the major. Locomotion is a fast blues. Moment's Notice and Lazy Bird leave the path of melodic and harmonic innovations guessed, the Coltrane would embark on his LP Giant Steps. Otherwise, the album held firmly to the dominant hard bop style of the time.

It was the only album Coltrane under his own name for the venerable Blue Note label. Coltrane called it in an interview in 1960 his favorite own. The album is regarded as one of the milestones of jazz. It is even after decades of a highly popular album - even if success is judged differently by the critics.
