BMW /5 motorcycles

The R 75/5 is a produced by BMW Motorrad with a two-cylinder four-stroke piston engine produced from 1969 to 1973.

General

The / 5 series consisted of the following models: R 75 /5 ( 750 cc, 37 kW / 50 PS), R 60 /5 ( 600 cc, 30 kW / 40 PS) and the authorities model, the BMW R 50 /5 ( 500 cm ³, 24 kW / 32 hp). The R 75/5 was just under 180 km / h one of the fastest production motorcycles of that time, but could not keep up with the Honda CB 750 with respect to the performance not quite. BMW responded by R 75/5 to the new demand for sports motorcycles, after sales of the outdated swingarm models had almost come to a standstill.

The so-called " line - Five " series replaced the "Full Swing BMW " the construction period from 1955. She was a complete rewrite, not just a facelift for BMW. The frame was modeled after the Norton featherbed frame. Also, the engines were new designs with slide bearing of the crankshaft roller bearing instead of the predecessor. With comparatively low specific Displacement power they were aimed at pulling and longevity.

The R 75/5 as the top model was also the first BMW with the Bing constant depression carburettors, which in motorcycle were not common at the time. Experiments had shown that the direct operation of such large slide - sections with Bowden was disadvantageous, could lead to " swallowed " and the collapse of the fuel atomization. So they built a small throttle in each carb and pulled the large slider indirectly via a pressure differential operated diaphragm, according to a principle of construction that was already common in the automotive industry.

The models were given the then generally accepted duplex drum brake in the front wheel. Disc brakes there was only with the introduction of the / 6 models from the end of 1973. At the rear, a full hub simplex brake was mounted. All models come with four-speed transmission and a shaft drive to the rear wheel. For the first time the engines were equipped with both the kick starter with an electric starter ( optional on the R 50 /5). The frames were no longer sidedare fit. At that time not yet widespread and was equipping the machines with H4 headlamps. Instead of the traditional line of the 1950s with the horizontally lying mufflers and black color first color layouts were offered. The tank was available in three different versions. The original version had the large, somewhat square -looking 24 -gallon tank. More rarely, there was the small, chrome-plated 18- liter version that this first version replaced the end of 1971. Of these, many machines in the export verkauft.Den were 24 liter tank it was only an extra charge. Starting in 1973, was allowed to be crome again, but kept the smaller tank at. In the course of production, the models were revised several times. The biggest turning point took place shortly before the end of production in 1973, when the rear swing arm and thus the whole rear was extended to stabilize the straight-line stability at high-speed motorway driving ( long arm ). This was taken at the successor R 75/6. The R 75/5 was / 5 detached from the R 75 /6 and the R 60 of the R 60/6. The 500 model was no successor. About the 750 engine, the successor series offered two higher-displacement 900 models. R 90 /6 with 60 hp and the R 90 S with 67 hp
