Trunk

The luggage compartment of the F11 holds 560-1670 liters. The rear seat backrest is divided in the ratio 40:20:40, their inclination can be adjusted in seven levels to up to 11 degrees ( optional). The fold the backrest can be carried in the baggage compartment using two control levers. The cargo cover lowered when the tailgate is closed automatically. The separately opening rear window automatically swings upwards at a keystroke. The tailgate can be opened and closed by remote control. In autumn 2011, a device for hands-free opening of the trunk has been introduced. Sensors detect the movement of the foot below the bumper and then activate the automatic opening.

Security

The F10 has a stiffer body than its predecessor, front and side airbags, side curtain head airbags, active head restraints for the driver and passenger. A tire defect indicator is part of the standard specification as optimized for pedestrian protection active bonnet which is raised in an accident in the front section 30 and the rear by 50 millimeters. Standard equipment also includes daytime running lights, fog lights and an adaptive brake light. Even an advanced emergency call system with automatic localization function over ConnectedDrive is available.

Child seats can be securely fastened only on the outer seats in the back seat because of the seat shape. There are also Isofix mountings are available. For the front passenger seat, the airbag can be switched off so that there also backward Baby Seats Seats may be secured in airbag is off.

Motors

With the launching of six engines were available ( four petrol engines and two diesel engines). In the third quarter of 2010 was followed by a four-cylinder diesel engine (184 hp) 135 kW and a CO2 emission of 132 g / km has. The gasoline engines use fuel High Precision Direct Injection, while the 523i and 528i versions are also equipped with an advanced lean burn mode.

In Touring only two straight-six petrol engines as well as a six-cylinder and a four-cylinder diesel were to launch initially available. In December 2010, the then touring with four diesel ( 520d, 525d, 530d and 535d ) and three petrol variants ( 523i, 528i and 535i ) was offered.

For the model year 2012 accounted for the previous 523i and 528i engine variants. Instead, the 520i, the 528i as a four-cylinder and the 530i was introduced. All diesel engines, with the exception of the 520d, received an overhaul, the 525d is now a doubly turbocharged four- cylinder. Also a particularly economical variant of the 520d was introduced in the 520d "Efficient Dynamics Edition". It features a longer rear axle ratio, low rolling resistance tires and improved aerodynamics, which only 119 g CO2 per km are ejected.

Environment

Under the marketing concept of BMW EfficientDynamics is a package of various technical measures to reduce fuel consumption, combined. The optional eight-speed automatic available to reduce fuel consumption compared to the conventional six-speed automatic up to six percent. A start-stop function was initially only at the 520d with manual transmission and the 530d xDrive with automatic transmission as standard. From model year 2011/2012 have all models ( with the exception of the 528i xDrive, the 550i and 550i xDrive of ) with both manual transmission and automatic transmission with a standard start - stop function. All engines meet the Euro 5 emissions standard With the diesel models diesel particulate filters are installed. The 530d can get an extra charge storage catalyst to reduce oxides of nitrogen, with the Euro 6 emissions standard is met. However, in its entirety, the curb weight of the car increased by around 180 kilograms.

Technology

Eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic

Upon request, an eight -speed automatic transmission transfers the power. Due to the high spread of gears the speed level and the noise level at high speeds were lowered. Despite the increase from six to eight stages of ZF 8HP automatic transmission was no need for additional components. Weight and dimensions are increased compared to the ZF 6HP - automatic only slightly. The eight-speed automatic has the additional ability to skip gears, so it can turn and has to open only one clutch if the driving situation from eighth to second gear. The gearbox is manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen.

Double wishbone front suspension

The F10 has, in contrast to its predecessor, no McPherson front axle, but one made of aluminum double-wishbone front axle. This Steering wheel damping and are separated from each other and thus guarantee a prospective lateral forces suspension comfort. Furthermore, the new front suspension improves the contact between the tire and road, which is conducive to the maneuverability.

All-wheel steering

The four-wheel steering ( " Integral Active Steering "), and is fitted to the 7 Series (F01 ), also comes in F10 used. With their help, the driving behavior on the one hand and on the other hand agile safer. At low speeds, the steering wheel when turning kicks the wheels of the rear axle opposite to the front axle by up to 2.5 °. This reduces the turning circle and the vehicle can be moved handy, even when maneuvering in confined spaces (eg in the car park ), the system comes into play. At higher speeds above 50 km / h, the rear wheels and front wheels are turned in the same direction and thus enable a more stable and safe lane changes. In F10 electromechanical power steering is used.

Long version

Exclusively for the Chinese automobile market, a long-wheelbase version of the 5 Series sedan was developed. Here, the wheelbase has been extended by 14 cm. In the rear comfort seats are installed. In addition, some extra facilities are available. The long version is offered with four-cylinder engine as the 520Li, 523Li, 525Li and 528Li. In versions 530Li and 535Li six-cylinder engines were installed.

Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid

At the International Motor Show 2010 in Geneva BMW has presented a concept of a full hybrid based on the 5 Series. In contrast to the 535i, in which the same straight-six petrol engine is used, the fuel consumption to be reduced by up to 10%. The electric drive is installed between the in-line six cylinder and the automatic transmission and produces an output of 40 kW. The electric motor is connected with an automatic coupling to the gasoline engine. Even a purely electric driving is possible.

Callbacks

On October 1, 2013 BMW has recalled about 176,000 vehicles of the models of the 1 Series, 3 Series and 5- Series, X1 and X3 SUV and Z-4 sports cars worldwide, including 6,000 vehicles in Germany. Affected vehicles built in 2012 and 2013. Reasons for this are problems on the camshaft four-cylinder petrol engines, which can become a possible disruption of oil supply to the vacuum pump to the failure, and thus to the loss of brake power assistance.
