BMW M30

The BMW M30 is a very successful engine series of the German car manufacturer BMW, which has built on the principle of construction of the four- cylinder BMW M10 and significantly contributed to the reputation of BMW as a manufacturer of excellent six-cylinder in-line engines. He was, at that time under other names, for the first time in 1968 in the series E3 and E9 (including CSL), later used mainly in 5, 6 and 7 series and remained until 1994 (until 1995, when the BMW M88 / BMW S38, the building on the M30 engine block four-valve versions, this includes ) in series production.

It is a 6- cylinder in-line petrol engine with an overhead camshaft and two valves per cylinder. By varying the bore and stroke engine came with 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.5 liter displacement. Depending on the version came carburettors or injection for mixture preparation used. Also turbo engine variants were built. Later, the smaller M20 six-cylinder engine was used in parallel for displacements up to 2.5 liters. As a basis for tuning the M30 engine was among other things the company Alpina, Herbert Hartge and Schnitzer.

The engine was eventually replaced by the BMW M60 V8 and M20 successor, the M50 six-cylinder engine.
