BMW N47

The N47 is a turbocharged inline four- cylinder diesel engine of the car manufacturer BMW. As a completely new development, he debuted in 2007 and replaced the predecessor M47. Since 2014 he is successively by his successor, replacing the B47.

Construction

The engine is based on an all-aluminum crankcase with thermally assembled cast iron liners. To improve the smoothness of two needle bearings balancer shafts are integrated in the crankcase (not at 85 kW variant 116d ). The four-valve cylinder head features two overhead camshafts which actuate the valves via roller cam followers. The common rail injection system operates at N47 with pressures from 1600 to 2200 bar. The fuel injection into the combustion chamber via centrally positioned solenoid injectors and piezo injectors. While in most variants of a VTG turbocharger is used, have the strongest expansion stages (150 kW or 160 kW) via two turbochargers, which operate on a combined principle of turbocharging and multi-layer charging. Emissions control is via a close-coupled oxidation catalyst positioned with diesel particulate filter.

The electronic engine management has also been designed for the following measures to increase efficiency:

  • Start -stop system
  • Intelligent generator control for braking energy recovery
  • Demand control of ancillary units
  • Shift Indicator

Performance Kits

On the part of BMW there for these diesel engines for some models of BMW Performance Power Kits. This is possible with the models 120d ( E81, E82, E87, E88 ) and 320d ( E90, E91, E92, E93 ) with 177 hp, which make 197 hp after the revision. The maximum torque rises by 40 then 390 Newton meters. As of March 2010, the Power Kit is also available for the factory 184 hp expansion stage of the N47, which delivers 200 hp after the revision. The maximum torque rises by 40 to 420 Newton meters.

Problems with the timing chain

The timing chain of the N47 engine family is considered to be susceptible to excessive wear. This can lead to premature failure. The result can be a serious damage to the engine. The problem affects all engines of the N47 series and for all versions up to production date of 1 September 2013. BMW is reflected in the cost of acquisition only in rare cases, be accommodating. Thus carry injured clients in many cases high costs.
