BMW N54

The N54 is a turbocharged petrol engine with six cylinders, which is produced by BMW since 2006. The engine with Bi-Turbo was introduced in autumn 2006 as a high -performance version of the BMW 3 Series, specifically the BMW 3 Series Coupé. Shortly thereafter, the use followed in other BMW models. He is the first turbocharged petrol engine from BMW since the 745i in 1980. The engine won from 2007 to 2012 six times in a row, the International Engine of the Year Award.

BMW is the performance of the N54B30 with 225 kW ( 306 hp), when published in 2008 BMW 7-Series (BMW F01), the power rating was increased to 240 kW. The engine uses two small turbochargers to keep the turbo lag as small as possible. For this reason, the charge pressure of only 0.4 bar with the goal to give the driver the feeling of having a car to drive with naturally aspirated engines. The engine made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Like the BMW N53 it does not use Valvetronic valve control called the BMW N52. The engine features direct fuel injection and fully variable valve timing ( VANOS ).

The engine block of the N54B30 similar to that of older BMW M54, it too was made of aluminum and cast iron cylinder. This is justified by the fact that you kept the engine block of the BMW N52 for a turbocharging unsuitable in order to exploit the advantages already mentioned can. Consequently, the N54B30 195 kg to about 30 kg heavier than the N52B30. In addition, this explains the identical with the M54B30 engine capacity of 2979 cc rather than 2996 cc of N52B30. The performance of the N54B30 resembles that of the N62B40, which is a V8 and 70 kg heavier. The torque of the low speed range the former trumps the V8 even. For this reason it was decided to produce a bi-turbo inline six- cylinder instead of a heavier V8 engine. The decisive factor was the use of the BMW 3 Series.
