BMW N55

The N55 is a turbocharged inline six- cylinder engine of the automobile manufacturer BMW. It was introduced in late 2009 in the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo ( 535i GT). He is the first twin-scroll turbocharger petrol engine from BMW with Valvetronic and direct injection system. BMW calls this system BMW TwinPower Turbo.

Construction

An innovation compared with the predecessor engine N54B30, in which two turbochargers were used is that the N55 has only one turbocharger. The so-called twin-scroll turbocharger, which has two separate spirals that lead the exhaust gas to the turbine wheel. While in N54 three cylinders were responsible for a turbocharger, three cylinders of one of the two spirals are responsible for driving the turbocharger at N55.

Also new is next to the twin-scroll turbocharger that turbocharging with direct injection and Valvetronic was combined with the N55 for the first time. Valvetronic is the stepless control for the stroke of the intake valves, which makes the throttle superfluous. Nevertheless, this is redundant. So the Valvetronic controls supplied for the combustion air mass in the motor itself through the combination of these three systems of consumption was further reduced and the response compared to the N54 to be improved.
