Specifications

The drive of the R 1100 GS is done by a luft-/ölgekühlten Two cylinder boxer engine with four valves per cylinder and each one overhead camshaft per cylinder. The engine has a displacement of 1085 cm ³ and developed 59 kW (80 hp). For insurance reasons, most motorcycles sold in Germany are restricted to 58 kW ( 78 hp). The top speed is 195 km / h The empty weight amounts to 243 kg ( fuel). The fuel tank has a capacity of 24 liters and made possible by modern injection ranges of over 400 km. The GS has the electronic engine control MA 2.1/2.2 Bosch ( Motronic ). The two cylinders have a bore diameter of 99 mm in diameter, the piston has a stroke of 70.5 mm and a compression ratio of 10.3:1. The manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded motor gasoline with an antiknock properties of at least 95 octane.

The chassis is based on a supporting engine / gearbox unit with bolted subframe. The often positively perceived driving behavior owes the GS of the newly designed front suspension called Telelever and Paralever rear suspension.

The original price was at the start of the sales period, 17,450 DM for addional extras such as anti-lock braking system or heated grips could be ordered from the factory.

There are two different details on the tank capacity of BMW. The models with plastic tank were given as 25 liter tank capacity, while the models were specified with sheet metal tank with 24 liters. Both are correct. The theoretical volume of the tank is 25 liters. Of these, only 24 liters are available, as the tank by design can not be completely filled.

Competing models were the Honda XRV 750 Africa Twin and Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Ténéré. The R 1100 GS was replaced by the displacement expanded R 1150 GS.

" But despite all the laurels - some problems BMW has not to date received in the handle. As would be the already known from the RS models, hooking gears. Although the Bavarian technician had tried to fix the transmission bucking the start of the Enduro by O -rings between the gear shafts and wheels. But unfortunately, with the consequence that the not exactly anyway good shifting deteriorated again. "
