BMW S 1000 RR

The BMW S 1000 RR is a motorcycle model class Superbike / Super Sportsman of the German motorcycle manufacturer BMW.

The bike was presented at Intermot in Cologne in 2008 and is produced in Spandau since the beginning of 2009 at the BMW plant in Berlin.

Design Features

The S 1000 RR is designed as Homologationsfahrzeug for participation in the World Superbike Championship.

Engine / transmission

The 59.8 kg heavy four-cylinder in-line engine has a displacement of 999 cm ³ and a conventional crankshaft with 180 ° firing interval. In contrast to comparable engines from other manufacturers, the 16 valves ( 33.5 mm intake and 27.2 mm exhaust valves made of titanium ) in the cylinder head is not actuated by bucket tappets, but on extremely small, carbon-coated cam followers, which according to BMW substantially lower mass forces against tappets have. Thus can be realized in principle, higher speeds and more stringent timing with lower frictions and better filling. According to BMW, this should allow speeds over 14,000 min-1. The four cylinder bore of Ø 80 mm in diameter, the piston has a stroke of 49.7 mm and a compression ratio of 13.0:1.

The motor control is adjustable in four modes ( Rain, Sport, Race, Slick ) and controls the variable-length intake manifolds and optional traction control. In Rain mode, the maximum power is 110 kW ( 150 hp) reduced ( from 163 hp model 2012 ), the Slick mode is enabled only after inserting a coding plug (activation barrier ).

The force is transmitted to the rear wheel via a multi- disc wet clutch with anti- hopping function, a 6- speed gearbox and a sealing ring chain.

In a bench test certifiable series machine made 147 kW (200 hp) at 12,400 min -1, the maximum torque was 123 Nm at 9400 min -1. Compared to the competition the engine had a power increase of approximately 14.7 kW ( 20 hp) in 2009.

Landing gear

BMW dispensed with the S 1000 RR in -house technology features such as Telelever front wheel suspension and shaft drive with Paralever. Instead, the bike with light alloy bridge frame, upside-down fork and swing arm is equipped with usual class indirectly angelenktem Monoshock. The vehicle is offered with an optional adjustable, only 2.5 kg anti -lock brakes and traction control.

Use in racing

Since the 2009 season, BMW is committed with the S 1000 RR SBK factory in the Superbike World Championship. The plant operations are led by the Rosenheim alpha Racing Team. The semi-works team alpha Technik - Van Zon BMW drives since the 2009 season with four riders in the IDM Superbike. 2013 pulled the factory team to Milan and finished in the same year the factory Superbike use.

Reliability

Compared to competitive models such as the Suzuki GSX- R 1000 or Kawasaki Ninja ZX -10R showed in the 50,000 - km - duration test of the magazine Motorcycle significant defects: criticism was a run-in inlet camshaft ( according to BMW, a curing failure ), timing chain tensioner, wheel and steering head bearings and exhaust flap. The S1000RR thus was ranked 20th in the endurance test rating.
