BMW S65

The S65 is a naturally aspirated V8 engine with overhead camshafts and 32 valves from BMW. He shares with the S85 V10 from the M5/M6 the same basic architecture and aluminum construction. It was introduced in the E92 M3 as a successor to the S54 straight-six. The engine won at the International Engine of the Year Awards for five consecutive years, the category " 3 to 4 liters of displacement ."

Development

The S65B40 was developed on the ever more stringent emission standards Euro V and CARB back. Because the highest possible potential for development of the S54 has been reached, one developed his successor, the S65.

He shares with the S85 the same bore of 92 mm and the same stroke of 75.2 mm, as well as the double -VANOS and the compression ratio of 12.0:1.

Nevertheless, the two engines differed in some respects. The VANOS system is driven by oil pressure of the engine, which makes a separate high-pressure hydraulic system as it is installed in the S85, superfluous. New, lightweight spark plugs with integrated knock sensors are mounted in each cylinder. This enables more accurate detection of the knocking with the additional advantage that the eight sensors actually weigh less than two in S85.

The engine block, which consists of a eutectic aluminum -silicon alloy, comes from BMW's Formula 1 foundry in Landshut, while the cylinder heads are produced from Hydro Aluminium in Austria. Other notable features are iron -coated aluminum pistons, steel -magnesium connecting rods, a forged steel crankshaft and eight individually controllable throttle.

A newer version of the Siemens MS S65 engine control unit than those that come in the S85 is used to refer to the S65. You can have more than 200 million calculations per second run against 25 million in the predecessor BMW S54.

The resulting engine weighs 202 kg, 15 kg less than its predecessor with only 6 cylinders.
