Bni Chiker

This place is located about 4 km from the Spanish enclave of Melilla. It is mainly inhabited by Moroccan Berbers. Beni Chiker located in the Rif mountain range. Within Beni Chiker the Berber accent " Takerit " is usually spoken, which is a modified form of Tarifit accent, as well as the official language of Arabic. The population is around 23,050 people (as of 2005). Beni Chiker is accessible via the international airport and the sea port of Nador Beni N'sar.

The most important industry is agriculture. Crops are wheat, legumes, olives, figs, almonds, wine and apricots. There is a little livestock mainly for the local market as well as beekeeping for export.

The municipality consists of several long sandy beaches that are not yet used for tourism.

Beni Chiker is the birthplace of the writer Mohamed Choukri and the politician Najat Vallaud - Belkacem, since 2012 government spokeswoman in the cabinet of Jean -Marc Ayrault.
