Boarding pass

A boarding pass is against the airline at the departure gate as proof of the right of the passenger to enter this for the booked flight standing ready aircraft ( boarding ). Therefore, the boarding card with a ticket is comparable.

After identification of the passenger as a holder of an entitlement to transportation for a specific flight by its flight ticket data it receives from the airline in his personal boarding pass, which entitles him after passing through the security gates (hand luggage examination and body search ) for boarding in the provided aircraft ( boarding ). The issuance of a boarding pass is therefore necessary component and completion of the check-in process. The identification and the subsequent issuance of the boarding pass can be done depending on the airline at the check -in counter or by the passenger himself at the check -in kiosks or via the Internet on a private computer ( online check -in). Passengers who want to take over their cabin baggage ( cabin baggage) out luggage on the flight booked, must abandon this luggage irrespective of the boarding pass before the check -in counter of the airline.

The boarding card usually contains the following information:

  • The designator (the two letters before the flight number, referred to on the ticket, partly as airlines Code )
  • The flight number
  • The gate number
  • The seat number ( including declaration earlier than Raucher-/Nichtrauchersitzplatz ) does not apply to low-cost airlines such as Ryanair
  • The scheduled departure time
  • The current deadline time at the boarding gate ( in aviation jargon load boarding time)

To the extent not already included as " luggage section" ( baggage tag ) handed out separately, the passenger ( demolition of this perforated boarding pass as an acknowledgment of its initial authorization ) obtained in the form of a sticker on the passenger section of the boarding pass, possibly with additional handwritten note, information about his at the check -in desk checked baggage (not to his hand luggage may be placed even on board by the passenger ).

In the access control at the gate, where often carried the repeated identification of the passenger based on his identity card or passport and boarding pass to the passenger, the control section to his boarding card is removed. This also serves to check whether any checked at the check-in counter people actually take the flight. The evaluation is carried out automatically by a small device that electronically maintains the passenger list and rear outputs the boarding pass, or by staff.

Many airlines offer in connection with an electronic ticket (eg electronic ticketing by Lufthansa) the possibility to check in online or via cell phone, PDA, or similar device, and then print out the boarding pass at home on your PC or on your mobile phone, PDA or similar device to load. This boarding pass contains a 2D barcode ( Aztec Code ), which is scanned when boarding. In addition, one can in this case, check-in machines, which in some cases are available with luggage belt, organize his boarding pass. In many large airports, there is the quick boarding, in which the passenger boarding card with the bar code automatically scans and thus gained access to the aircraft. Because this method makes no airport staff can point out when the seat should have changed, the passenger gets an automatic expression that makes him aware of the new seat if necessary.

For domestic flights or flights within the Schengen area, an identification omitted completely from their passports or passport, but is carried out due to security concerns in general anyway.
