Bob Bates (musician)

Robert " Bob" Bates ( born September 1, 1923 in Pocatello, Idaho, † September 13, 1981 in San Francisco ) was an American jazz bassist. He played with Dave Brubeck.

Life and work

Bob Bates is the brother of bassist Norman Bates. He studied classical bass from 1944 to 1948 and played with Sonny Dunham in 1947, with Jack Fina von 1948 until 1949. Most remembered is Bates ' membership in the early formations of Dave Brubeck 1953-1956. After his departure took over his brother Norman 's place in the Brubeck band. Since then, Bob Bates was no longer active as a jazz musician.
