Bob Berry (ice hockey)

Victor Robert "Bob" Berry ( born November 29, 1943 in Montreal, Quebec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player ( left wing ) and coach, who played from 1968 to 1977 for the Montreal Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League.

Career

Berry had in his youth, both in hockey and in the American Football a sporting perspective. He is one of the last players who were active in both sports in the professional sector. Of the Peterborough Petes in the OHA he transferred to the Sir George Williams College. During this time he played football for the Montreal Rifles.

His transfer rights to the National Hockey League were at the Montreal Canadiens and here he tried with 25 years in the 1968/69 season also the leap to professional hockey player. In the very strong field Canadiens he came only two appearances and mostly played in the American Hockey League with the Cleveland Barons. After another year in the AHL with the Montreal Voyageurs, the Canadiens sold him to the Los Angeles Kings. In a series with Juha Widing and Mike Byers, he was the second best scorer of the Kings in his rookie season. After the following season was slightly worse, followed by four years in which he scored over 20 goals each. But he convinced not only on the attack, but also in the defensive area he has done valuable work. After the 1976/77 season, he did not fit into the concept of the Kings. He played one more year in the AHL with the Springfield Indians before he ended his active career.

As head coach, he returned to the 1978/79 season to the Los Angeles Kings back. Three years he was behind the band of the Kings, then he moved to the Montreal Canadiens. After he had retired with the Canadiens spoiled by success twice in a row in the first playoff round and did not go his third season on the expectations of those responsible, he was replaced in February 1984 by Jacques Lemaire. Soon he had a new job. The Pittsburgh Penguins committed him from the 1984 / 85th With Mario Lemieux, a young star was new to the squad. Again, Berry was three years in office, after he was able to reach the playoffs in any season, followed the next change.

His next stop was the St. Louis Blues. Here he worked as an assistant coach and assistant general manager. Over the 1992/93 season, he took over the position of head coach. After one and a half years he resigned his position again. Until 1997, he stayed in St. Louis before moving to the San Jose Sharks assistant coach.

Today Berry Scout is with the Los Angeles Kings.
