Bob Charles (golfer)
Sir Bob Charles ( born March 14, 1936 in Carterton, New Zealand) is a New Zealand professional golfer.
Private
Bob's parents Ivor Charles and Phyllis were avid and talented golfer. He married 1963 Verity and has a daughter and a son. In the meantime, he also has four grandchildren. Bob now lives alternately in Florida, USA and in Canterbury, New Zealand.
Career
1954 at the age of 18, he has won the New Zealand Open. His biggest highlight was winning the British Open in 1963 at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Course in Lancashire. He is the only left-handed golfer in the world and the only New Zealander who has ever won the British Open. Bob is thus the first New Zealander who managed to win a major tournament. According to him, the only succeeded more Michael Campbell. Today, he still plays with at Senior PGA tournaments.
