Bob Houghton

Robert Douglas Houghton ( born October 13, 1947 known as Bob Houghton or Bobby Houghton ) is an English football player and coach.

Career

His career lasted over 30 years and led him into ten different countries. Houghton was three years midfielder for FC Fulham ( 1966-69 ) and Brighton & Hove Albion ( 1969-70 ). In the South League, he served as player-manager of Hastings United at age 23 one of the youngest coach in English professional football. In the early 1970s he also coached Maidstone United and worked as an assistant under Bobby Robson at Ipswich Town.

Malmö FF

In 1974, he became coach of the Swedish first division club Malmö FF. The former provincial and amateur club he led to national and international successes, including the achievement of the UEFA Champions League final against Nottingham Forest in 1979, which was lost narrowly (0-1). The team was originally made ​​with local players who lived within 60 miles of Malmo. It was the first and only time that a Swedish team reached the European Cup final.

He also won the Swedish championship and the Svenska Cupen several times and was runner-up in the Intercontinental Cup in 1979, as Nottingham Forest refused to participate. Together with his close friend Roy Hodgson he was widely responsible for the transformation of Swedish football to the modern style of play.
