Bob Knight

Robert Montgomery Knight ( born October 25, 1940 in Massillon, Ohio ) is a retired American basketball coach. Known as the choleric Knight is one of the most successful coaches NCAA history. In 1984, he coached the U.S. basketball Olympic team at the Games in Los Angeles.

After an unremarkable high school career Knight got 1958 a grant from the Ohio State University. In 1960, he won, if only as a bench player, at the side of John Havlicek and Jerry Lucas exceptional players the NCAA championship. By 1962 they played two more times in the final. Knight knew that his talent would not be enough for the NBA, and therefore planned a career as a coach. At this time he learned many intricacies of the basketball game of legendary coach Fred Taylor.

In 1965, he began his career at the head coach USMA at West Point. His team played extremely successful, and so the major college programs were aware of him. One of his players was Mike Krzyzewski, who also was to become a successful coach. In 1971 he got the head coach items in the Indiana University offered and accepted. In the season 75/76 and his team managed the feat of the season to remain unbeaten. With nearly 35 years he was the youngest college coach to lead his team to an NCAA championship. 1981 and 1987 the team won two more titles. By 2000 he was able to celebrate with Indiana over 650 victories.

On 11 September 2000 Knight was released by the then President of the University of Indiana Myles Brand, after he had assaulted a student. It was just one of many scandals in the career of Bobby Knight. A few months after his expulsion he got the coaching job at Texas Tech University. This team he coached but with limited success. On 16 January 2008, he achieved his 900th victory as coach, a brand that has been achieved by anyone yet another coach before him.

In February 2008, Knight announced his retirement as coach. His son Patrick then took over as coach at Texas Tech University.
