Bob McCracken

Bob McCracken (actually Robert Edward McCracken, born November 23, 1904 in Dallas, † 4 July 1972) was an American jazz clarinetist.

Bob McCracken played at the beginning of his musical career with local musicians in Dallas, as with Jack Teagarden, Eddie Whitley, the Southern Trumpeters and Doc Ross's Jazz Bandits. From 1926 to 1928 he lived in New York City, where he played with Johnny Johnston and Willard Robison's Levee Loungers. After his return to Dallas, he worked with Ligon Smith, Joe Gill and again with Doc Ross, went with Joe Venuti and Frankie Trumbauer on tour before he moved to Chicago in 1939. There he played in the bands of Willard Robinson (1927 /28), Bud Freeman ( 1939-40 ), Jimmy McPartland (1939 /40), Wingy Manone (1941 ), Benny Goodman ( 1941), Russ Morgan and Wayne King. He represented 1952/53, Barney Bigard with the Louis Armstrong All-Stars on tour; then he settled in Los Angeles. There he played in various Dixieland jazz revival bands, worked with Kid Ory (1953 /54), Ben Pollack, Pete Daily, Jack Teagarden and Wild Bill Davison. From 1959 he worked again with Ory; with Red Allen and Kid Ory recorded several sides of the plate, Red Allen Meets Kid Ory and We've Got Rhythm.
