Bob O'Connor (mayor)

Robert E. " Bob" O'Connor, Jr. ( born December 9, 1944 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, † September 1, 2006 ) was an American politician and mayor of the city of Pittsburgh from 3 January 2006 until his death. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

O'Connor was born in 1944 in the district of Greenfield. He attended Pittsburgh 's Taylor Allderdice High School, worked briefly as a steelworker and in catering, where he rose to Vice President of a chain. He was married to Jud Levine O'Connor, with whom he had a daughter and two sons.

His political career began in 1991 with his election to the City Council, which he headed as president from 1998. 1997 and 2001 he tried to enforce in his party as a candidate for mayor. He failed, however, both times to Tom Murphy, the incumbent mayor. Particularly scarce was the result in 2001, when both candidates received about 30,000 votes after a million - dollar campaign. Murphy prevailed with 699 votes ahead.

When the internal primaries in 2005 O'Connor finally succeeded, partly because Murphy did not compete again. On November 8, he won the election to Republican Joe Roth wine. A few months after the election of a brain tumor was found in him. Despite an initially positive diagnosis he died on September 1, 2006 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital.
