Bob Rae

Robert Keith Rae PC, OC, O.Ont, QC ( born August 2, 1948 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian politician and lawyer. He was from 1990 to 1995 the 21st Prime Minister of Canada's largest province of Ontario.

Life

Rae began his political career in 1980 as chairman of the leftist Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP ). After decades in opposition the NDP reached in early elections in 1990 under his leadership, a brief absolute majority, so that Rae was ever elected as the first NDP man as Prime Minister of Ontario on October 1, 1990.

In his five years in government Rae suffered from a massive recession in the economy in his province. Rae initially tried this by increased government spending - Keynes thought of spending deficite following - to address what the economic situation but rather further deteriorated. As Rae was finally forced by necessity to government cuts, he also lost the support of the trade unions.

In the elections of 1995, Rae was clearly deselected. There followed years out of politics, in which Rae increasingly distanced itself from the New Democrats. The official break he finally took place in 2002 by accusing the party's lack of reform assets.

2005 Rae returned as an independent representative of the Liberal government of Paul Martin back into politics. After the electoral defeat of the Liberal Party and the resignation of Martin Rae said on April 26, his willingness to apply for the post of Chairman of the Liberal Party of Canada.

According to surveys, Rae was one of the favorites in the internal party race to succeed the Interim Chairman Bill Graham. Surprisingly, sat down at the election on 2 December 2006, however, by the former Environment Minister Stéphane Dion.

On 9 June 2009 Rae at the airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka was held on the grounds he is not calling because of his sympathy for the Tamil Tiger rebels, a security risk after a twelve-hour detention, he was deported to London.

As of July 31, 2013 Rae resigned his seat to serve as chief negotiator for the aboriginal ( First Nations ) of James Bay to lead their negotiations with the provincial government of Ontario.
