Bob Roberts (footballer)

Robert John Roberts ( called Bob Roberts, born April 3, 1859 in West Bromwich, † 1933) was an English football goalkeeper. He made especially towards the end of the 1880s in the West Bromwich Albion in the English national attention.

1879 The club West Bromwich Strollers, the forerunner of the Football Association, was founded by a group of workers of the factory Salter's Spring. This first played cricket in Dartmouth Park, decided in 1882, however, a football club, West Bromwich Albion (short: " WBA " ) to set up. Roberts, who also worked in the factory, played for the club for the first time on 29 January 1881, was represented from that time on virtually any field position, until finally he was the goalkeeper of the team.

In the first years Roberts was the top player of the club. In March 1887, he played his first international match for England against Scotland and was defeated with 2:3. Other players were Joseph Lofthouse, James Forrest and Fred Dewhurst. Roberts also participated in two other international matches against Ireland, each victorious went with 5:1 and 9:1 to the end.

Roberts left WBA in 1889, returned in 1891, however, back once more and took part in nine other games. In 1892 he finally left the club and joined Aston Villa. Later in the year, however, he eventually returned to professional football back.

Bob Roberts died in 1933.
