Bobby Doerr

Robert " Bobby" Pershing Doerr ( born April 7, 1918 in Los Angeles, California ) is a former American professional baseball player in Major League Baseball.

Biography

Bobby Doerr, who played in his entire career for the Boston Red Sox, made ​​his debut in the American League on April 19, 1937. He was discovered by Eddie Collins on the same Matchmaking like Ted Williams. The second baseman was particularly impressed by his consistent performances. From 1938 on, he never had a batting average of less than 27%. Three times he surpassed the 30 % mark. 1944 Doerr was awarded the The Sporting News Most Valuable Player Award.

After a break due to his military service in 1946 Doerr returned back to the Red Sox and won them the title in the American League. In the World Series he came up with a batting average of 40.6 %, but this was not enough to beat the St. Louis Cardinals. His last game he played on September 7, 1951. After his playing career, he worked as a coach with the Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays.

In 1986, he was received by the Veterans Committee in the Baseball Hall of Fame. His jersey number 1 is no longer available from the Red Sox.
