Bobby Murdoch

Robert White "Bobby" Murdoch ( born August 17, 1944 in Rutherglen, † 15 May 2001, Glasgow ) was a Scottish footballer who played for Celtic and part of the Lisbon Lions team was that in 1967 won the European Champions Cup. Together with Bertie Auld, he was the outstanding central midfield for Celtic.

During his time at Celtic, he won eight times the Scottish Premier League, five times the Scottish Cup and five times the Scottish League Cup and the European Champions Cup in 1967. He also played in 1970 in the final of the European Champions' Cup against Feyenoord, Celtic but lost 2-1. His last years at Celtic were mainly characterized by injury problems, but he remained an important part of the team notwithstanding.

In 1973 he moved from Celtic to Middlesbrough FC and so was Jack Charlton's first purchase. He also conveyed the young Graeme Souness his style of play. Prior to 1976 his playing career ended, he played 125 times for Middlesbrough. After the end of his career as an active player, he was coach of the youth team.

1981 and 1982 he was the coach of the first team Middlesbrough, but was discharged shortly after the relegation to the Second Division.

Murdoch tried to be a bartender, but fell into debt. In his last years he worked at Celtic Park, where he was responsible for the care of the players.

Murdoch died at the age of 56 years on the effects of a stroke in Glasgow's Victoria Infirmary.
