Bobby Ray Inman

Bobby Ray Inman ( born April 4, 1931 in Rhonesboro, Upshur County, Texas ) is a retired American naval officer. He was from 1977 to 1981 director of the National Security Agency.

Biography

Bobby Inman was born in Rhonesboro, a remote village in eastern Texas. He was 15 years old graduated from Mineola High School and left the University of Texas at Austin at the age of 19 with a Bachelor of Arts. He then began his career with the U.S. Navy and worked already there along with the National Security Agency.

Time at NSA

Inman began in 1961 at Navy Field Operational Intelligence Office of the NSA as an analyst for intelligence operations to work, watching the Soviet Navy. On 5 July 1977 he became the youngest by then director of the NSA and retained the post until 31 March 1981. As director he sat twice the Deputy Director from, to Benson K. Buffham followed Robert E. Drake and Ann Z. Caracristi. Inman proceeded to draw up a pattern, which provided for a limited term of office for the deputy of two to four years. In his opinion, the gray eminence Louis W. Tordella had been too long in office.

Unlike its predecessors, the Inman NSA employees presented open dar. He glanced occasionally in various departments and cared for everyday work and not exclusively to the representation of the NSA over the other intelligence services of the United States and the other American foreign world. This led to a growing sympathy on the part of intelligence committees of the Senate and House of Representatives. Inman's openness to authorities and the media, he even met once on the ABC program " Nightline " also brought an end to the unveiling stories about the NSA, where he was sent previously. He also stated that the U.S. had developed the asymmetric cryptosystem.

NSA versus CIA

Up to Inman's leadership as director of the NSA developed from a weak position compared to the CIA into a strong organization. He wanted the CIA not only exceed the spying, but also in the analysis of intercepted information. In this case, government officials refused Inman rarely something; if he strongly argued for a project that exceeded the budget framework, efforts have been made to conform to his wishes. After the NSA

12 February 1981 to 10 June 1982, he was then in place of Frank Carlucci Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and also held the post of professor in 1987 at the University of Texas.

1993 Inman was proposed by President Bill Clinton to succeed Les Aspin as Secretary of Defense. As part of the launch of the new candidates rumors again came on, Inman was gay and therefore unsuitable as head of the defense department. Although Inman then revealed parts of his private life, he was refused. In a TV show live broadcast one hours long bubbled from Inman negative statements about the allegations. He was the victim of a new McCarthytums and Senator Bob Dole and columnist William Safire had conspired against him. Instead of admitting that they had dropped him, Inman later made the attempt to portray it as if he would have the job of defense minister ever not wanted.
