History

The site is located on the Bodegraven, marked in the 1st century, the frontier of the Roman Empire. In " Museum voor Oudheden " is a 1937 in Leiden in Bodegraven excavated rider helmet of gilded bronze, who has heard a Roman soldier. Presumably this was a " castellum " a Roman Legion. In 1994 were made interesting finds during excavations, which are exhibited in the Town Hall in a showcase. From history to 1600 then is little more known. In the city fires in the Middle Ages and in the 17th century much was lost. Thus, it is uncertain whether Bodegraven earlier town charter has had. It is also uncertain whether the location is a city or a village. In 1882 a cheese factory and wholesale business was founded, the Bodegraven has owed a certain economic prosperity.
