Body force

The volume force is a force that acts on each mass point of a body in the entire volume of a body. This makes it different from the surface forces acting on the surface of the body. Volume forces are caused by fields, so they are also called field forces.

In fluid mechanics, the volume force is part of the Navier -Stokes equations and describes the influence of external forces such as gravity or the appearance of forces on a liquid.

Examples of the volume force are:

  • The weight (gravitational force)
  • The ( d' Alembert ) inertial force
