Bodzentyn

Bodzentyn is a Polish town in the district of Kielce Holy Cross Voivodeship with a population of around 2,200. It is the seat of the homonymous urban and rural community of 12,000 people, located on the outskirts of the Holy Cross Mountains and is the administrative center of Świętokrzyski National Park.

History

The town was founded in 1355 by the Cracow Bishop Jan Bodzanta. In 1413 it received city rights. From the 16th to the 18th century, it was an artisan and trade center. With the Third Partition of Poland in 1793 Bodzentyn fell to Austria, after the Congress of Vienna in 1815 as part of Congress Poland was Russian. In the 19th century, in 1870, the city rights were lost again. Seven years earlier, a battle between Russians and Poles during the January Uprising took place in the vicinity. 1939 marched the army and established a Jewish ghetto for about 1,000 Jewish residents of the city and many more from the surrounding area. In September 1942, the survivors were under, and brought gassed Dawid Rubinowicz Treblinka extermination camp. In 1995, the city rights were renewed. Today Bodzentyn is known as the starting point for excursions into the National Park, as well as for his somewhat controversial animal welfare reasons horse market. The horse market and the cattle market has now been closed due to the partially untenable conditions.
