The Boerboel ( Afrikaans for " farm dog ", " Great Dane Bauer "; Burbul pronounced ) is a not recognized by the FCI breed of dog from South Africa. The breed is recognized by the Kennel Union of South Africa ( KUSA ), representing South Africa in the FCI. It belongs in the scheme of KUSA for the Working Group.

Origin and History

The Boerboel is a hulking farm dog of a farmer in South Africa and neighboring countries. To protect the farms from wild animals and cattle thieves, established there a dog from Mastifftyp. In the past, he was never seen as a race, but in the breeding value was placed on the function.

The dog should go back to the time of Jan van Riebecks ( 1652), which was the first Dutch administrator of the Cape. The then coming into the country settlers brought with them to protect each of the biggest and strongest dogs with their country of origin. Later, the British still controlled at their Mastiffs. Only in the 1980s brought the South African Stud these dogs to the rank of a race.

Appearance

The Boerboel is a large, powerful dog with well developed muscles. The males have very muscular and his bitches pronounced female. His movement patterns should be open and flowing. All body parts must be consistent with each other. The minimum ( withers ) in males is 60 cm, 66 cm are ideal. Bitches are at least 55 cm high, ideal 61 cm.

Boerboels are intelligent, reliable and obedient dogs with a strong protective behavior. You are confident to fearless, but caught up with the family.

Legal

The Boerboel is considered in the Swiss cantons of Fribourg and Geneva as a potentially dangerous dog. The position is subject to authorization in Freiburg, banned in Geneva. Imports to Denmark and France is also prohibited in the company of tourists ( see breed list).
