Boeung Kak

The Boeung Kak Lake is a lake in the northern part of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Development

2007, the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen leased the lake and the adjacent area for 99 years. The investment company Shukaku wants to build there with the help of Chinese investors a whole new neighborhood. The Boeung Kak lake is gradually filled up with sand to make room for new, profitable investments such as luxury apartments and office towers.

2011 were still alive approximately 10,000 people around the Boeung Kak lake in Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh. More than twice as many local residents there were still in 2010, before the forced removals began under the threat of violence. In response to violent protests precipitated intervention by the World Bank. As long as there is no satisfactory agreement between the government and residents of the Boeung Kak Lake, the financial aid of up to 70 million dollars a year would be set.

The conviction of thirteen demonstrators in May 2012 in a three -hour process without lawyers to several years of imprisonment attracted international criticism.
