Boffres

Boffres is a commune with 620 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in Ardèche, in the Rhône -Alpes.

The place was known as the residence of the French composer and music theorist Vincent d' Indy, whose family comes from a noble family from the Vivarais.

The inhabitants are called Boffrais and Boffraises.

Geography

The municipality is located in the skin Vivarais, in the north of the department, on the plateau of Vernoux. The river Duzon crosses the municipality. The nearest town is Guilherand -Granges in 15 km distance.

History

The name of the village derives from the local wind which blows here and Balfredo is called.

In the 13th century the town was owned by the family of Anduze, in the 15th century it was the Bermond de La Voulte passed, which they also belonged to the French Revolution. She then moved again and the owner came to the Lévy- Ventadour.

Near the hamlet Leyrisse towards Boffres, we also saw the fiercest battle of the Cevennenkrieges when the army of camisards has been trounced by the followers of the king on 8 July 1709. The outcome of this battle was decisive for the further course of religious conflicts in the region.

Culture and sights

The community Boffres was heavily fortified in the 17th century, even today, traces of how to visit the remains of the rampart or the ruins of the castle. The round keep of pink granite forms the highest point of the village and has been made ​​of many small blocks. The chapel and the village fountain of the community are still in good condition. Many other historic buildings such as houses Tarvidon, Chabret, Gleize, as well as the ancient Tempelhof are also well protected.

Boffres is also home to numerous castles. The most famous of which is the Château des Faugs that has been built in 1886 specifically for Vincent d' Indy. His bust can be seen today in the village square. After the First World War he was the lock on, however, and moved to the Côte d' Azur. Other famous castles, the Château de Périer and the Château de Cachard that has been built in the 15th and 16th century and set in the local forest.

In addition, the place has a Romanesque church and a temple, which is one of the oldest and best preserved in the region. The main building was already built in the mid 17th century. The temple was inaugurated but only on 11 November 1838 by priest Brunel.
