Bogdan Musiol

Bogdan Musiol ( born July 25, 1957 in Świętochłowice, Upper Silesia ) is a former German Bobsportler. In addition to seven Olympic medal success, he was in 1978 and 1991 world champion in the four-man, 1989 world champion in the two- and 1983 European champion in the two-man bob.

Life and career

Musiols family moved to East Germany in the 1960s from Poland. In Wermsdorf he started as a track and field athlete where he was above all a good putter. In 1977, he joined the bobsleigh. First, he drove in the two- with the pilot Horst Bernhardt. With Horst Schönau he was 1978 World Champion for the first time. Gradually he started with almost all significant bobsleigh pilot of the GDR: Bernhard Germeshausen, Meinhard taker, Bernhard Lehmann, Detlef Richter and finally Wolfgang Hoppe.

From 1980 to 1994 Musiol participated in five Olympic Games part (Statistics below). The captain of the NVA was at end of his career with 31 medals in international competitions (Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships - Gold 7x, 16x silver, bronze 8x ) the most successful bobsledder at all. Only his long-time pilot Wolfgang Hoppe could surpass that mark with 33 successes. Musiol launched for the ASK forward Oberhof, from which the later WSV Oberhof 05 emerged, for which he started towards the end of his career.

In 2000, he was sports director of Bobsleigh and Luge Federation for Germany. He is the father of ski jumper Julian Musiol.

Musiol in 1980 and 1988 awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.
