Bogoslof Island

Bogoslof Iceland is a small uninhabited volcanic island in the Fox Islands, which belong to the Aleutian Islands. The 2 km long and 0.75 km ² island is located north of Umnak.

Mostly submarine volcano

Bogoslof Iceland is the tip of a submarine volcano, which rises 1,500 meters above the bottom of the Bering Sea. The volcano has erupted several times in historical times, the eruptions have made the island disappear again and again and can show up in other places, which led to a confusing naming. The current island is the remnant of several lava domes of outbreaks from 1796 to 1992. Fire fixed Iceland, about 800 meters north-west, is a remnant of the eruption of 1883.

As early as 1907 the islet of Theodore Roosevelt was awarded the neighboring Fire Iceland as a special protection area for sea lions and sea birds. Along with Fire Bogoslof part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. In November 1967, the National Park Service raised the island a National Natural Landmark.
