Bogside

The Bogside is an inhabited by Irish republicans and nationalists area, just outside the historic city walls of Derry, Northern Ireland. The area was a focal point of many events during the Northern Ireland conflict ( the so-called " Troubles " ) - from the " Battle of the Bogside " 1969 on Bloody Sunday 1972 to the present.

As tourist attractions, the " Murals " are mentioned eleven large gable murals, which go on for the entire length of Rossville Street and are intended as a tribute to the sufferings which had to be overcome in the struggle for human rights.

The landmark of the Bogside is the " Free Derry Corner ". Was in January 1969 there, at the entrance to the neighborhood (corner of Lecky Road and Fahan Street), from residents of the Bogside, the slogan (or the warning to the security forces ) wrote " You are now entering Free Derry " on a gable wall. From the former building today is only the house wall with the slogan - in the middle of a roundabout. Each year the gable wall is suitable for various occasions repainted and redecorated - eg it was painted pink in July 2007 on the occasion of " Foyle Pride Week ".

Equally famous are the Gas Yard Feile, an annual music and arts festival.
