Bojnourd (Persian بجنورد, also Bojnurd, Bojnūrd, Bojnourd or Bojnord ) is the capital of the Iranian province of North Khorasan.

The city is located 701 km from the state capital Tehran and 2012 has almost 197,000 inhabitants.

History

Bojnourd was probably founded by the Safavids. The city walls included, among others, four mosques and as many city gates. Before the walls were profitable and irrigated fields.

1896 and 1929 the city and its surrounding area was hit by earthquake and largely destroyed. During reconstruction, the streets were created in the grid pattern and was abandoned on a city wall.
