The summer or oak bolete (Boletus aestivalis, syn. B. reticulatus ) is a species of fungus in the family Dickröhrlingsverwandten. He is one of the edible mushrooms and can be found already in May.

Features

The summer cep is relatively large, indented in the pileus and stipe fruiting bodies with hemispherical to pad-shaped, 6 to 20 centimeters wide in exceptional cases up to 25 centimeters hats and 6 to 18 inches long and thick 2 to 6 inches, bulbous, clavate or cylindrical stems. The flesh is white, also under the hat skin, mild taste and has no particular smell.

Ecology

Like all boletus is the summer cep a mycorrhizal fungus, who lives in Central Europe exclusively with deciduous trees, especially beech and oak trees. He is accordingly present in beech, beech-fir and oak-hornbeam forests, but can also be found in park-like habitats. The type makes no special demands on the pH of the soil, it is found in basic, neutral and acidic soils that are moist to moderately dry and loamy, more rarely it occurs on sandy soils. The fruiting bodies appear very early in the year (from May / June), but can be found in warmer climates until well into October.

Dissemination

The summer cep is a European species, but to have been found in Australia. To the north it occurs to central Sweden and central Finland, east he was found to Katowice in Poland.

Importance

The summer bolete is a popular edible mushroom. Like all members of the genus Boletus he is in Germany protected and may only be collected in small quantities for personal use.

Origin of the name

For the Summer Cep two names are used: The above example aestivalis and B. reticulatus. The epithet aestivalis suggests the growth period of the fruit body in the summer, the species name reticulatus refers to the network drawing of the handle cover.
