Bolgheri

Bolgheri is a part of Castagneto Carducci in the province of Livorno, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The district is located 8 km north of the main town of Castagneto Carducci and on the northern edge of the Metalliferous Hills. The nature reserve Oasi di Bolgheri is part of the local area.

History

The name refers to the Bulgarians, who were stationed in the village in support of the Lombards. Until then, the place as Sala del Duca Allone was known. First mentioned in writing is the place as Bulgari Castrum on 20 November 1075 a document of Pope Gregory VII to the Bishop of Populonia. In the 13th century the family of Della Gherardesca took over supremacy in place. In the Middle Ages the town was repeatedly victims of the wars for supremacy in Italy, he was occupied in 1393 and destroyed by the troops of Florence, and in 1496 by Maximilian I..
